Overview

KidsEat app is a project that uses resources to better help children and parents learn about healthy cooking and eating so that they can plan and provide better nutritional decisions in their household.

Problem

Over 90 percent of food consumed by children is junk and the majority of their habits are linked to their parents' eating behavior. This is often caused by lack of resources or knowledge to be able to get the support parents need.

Recommended Approach

Design an app along with a website that will help parents improve education on food safety, nutrition, and recipes in order to get their kids to be more engaged in better eating habits.

Research

For the research, I relied on user data from existing research based around children's health and guidelines.

User Pain Points

The following pain points were commonly noted based on existing research:

• Food Safety - Users were hesitant to cook a meal because lack of experience.

• Nutrition - Users have a tendency to overlook the nutritional information displayed on packaging.

• Recipes - Users found it easier to order take out than trying to read a recipe.

Design

The design process went through a couple of iterations because it needed to accommodate both adults and kids.  Bright colors to entice younger viewers while maintaining information for adults.  In a later iteration, a reward system will be implemented by establishing medals (achievements) for completing specific task or recipes.  This will provide a game like structure to help motivate kids and provide an activity that the parents can be involved in as well.

Takeaway

• Food education is an important part to our children's health and seldomly do we take the time to learn about the food we ingest.

• As parents we need to encourage our children the importance of healthy eating and where their food comes from.  It's so easy to make are way to a drive through window and order a hamburger and fries.
